Creativity Theories and Perspectives

Vygotsky emphasized highly the application of play in early childhood, arguing that as children took up different roles, they not only stretched their imagination but also started experimenting with how these roles would behave under varying conditions (Vygotsky, 1978). Children start to learn things from different points of view while engaging in dramatic play, and they become more socially sensitive and emotionally aware. Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences points to the place of drama in the construction of interpersonal and linguistic skills enabling children to communicate more expressively and efficiently (Gardner, 2011). Torrance's definition of creativity in operation is evidenced where children create new characters, settings, and stories, showing imagination and the ability to stretch (Torrance, 1966). Bruner commented too that story is at the centre of helping children make sense of the world through their own process, the nub of drama (Bruner, 1986).As a whole, drama is a very important element of cognitive, social, and affective learning, and therefore it is an incredible catalyst for energizing creative development.
